Mary-Rebekah & Ben’s wedding

2 weeks after I photographed Chelsea & Jim’s wedding ceremony at the Ohio Union, I had the pleasure of shooting Mary-Rebekah & Ben’s reception at the Ohio Union.  I have to say, the in-house caterer at the Ohio Union cooks some pretty amazing food, I was raving about my meal for days!

Mary-Rebekah & Ben’s wedding ceremony was at the Indianola Presbyterian Church in Clintonville, then we had a driving tour to get pictures at North Bank Park, then to the Ohio Theater, and then over to the Ohio Stadium (not inside).  They are such the nicest couple to work with, and so much fun! They and their bridal party had a blast the entire day.  Just wait till you see some of the pictures. :-)

Ideas of places for engagement pictures in Columbus Ohio

Did you just get engaged, and are looking for some ideas for places in Columbus (Ohio) to get engagement pictures taken?  When I schedule engagement pictures with couples, I usually give a few ideas on some places we can go (I really don’t like doing engagement pictures in the studio… very boring!).  Really the options are limitless, as a good photographer can take some amazing photos anywhere that you happen to be!

But for all the Googlers out there, I thought I’d write a blog article with bunches of ideas, so if you’re at a loss or need a spark of creativity, here are some ideas for places to have engagement pictures taken around Columbus.

First, think of your personality… are you into nature and the great outdoors?  Columbus has literally dozens of parks at your disposal, from the little bitty ones (one fav of mine is Minerva Lake) to the larger metroparks (the most popular for photographers being Inniswoods Metro Gardens in Westerville).  For a complete listing, visit the Columbus Metroparks website.  There are also other beautiful parks in the area, with interesting spots to use; check out Homestead Park (which has a beautiful lake and a covered bridge), Scioto Park (with the really cool Tecumseh sculpture and overlook), Goodale Park (beautiful lake, gazebo, close to the Short North), Schiller Park (in German Village), Creekside Park (in Gahanna, with a little waterfall), Heritage Park (with the Everal Barn, in Westerville), Whetstone Park/the Park of Roses (with beautiful roses, a black metal staircase, a small gazebo), the Topiary Park (by the main library), Franklin Park (outside of the Conservatory, with a neat sculpture, the Bridal Garden, and a small waterfall), Antrim Park (with a lake), Fancyburg Park (in Upper Arlington), or outside of Jeffrey Mansion (in Bexley).  You can even go to the Columbus Zoo for some fun engagement pictures!

If a park isn’t necessarily your thing, you can go a little more urban.  There is North Bank Park (with an overlook of the city of Columbus) or outside of COSI (another view of the city).  Battelle Riverfront Park is a rather neat little urbany looking park, that is right by the Santa Maria (another neat place for pictures).  A walk along the Short North is chock full of some of the most interesting (photographically speaking) spots in Columbus.  There’s archways on the streets, big columns at Hyde Park, the orange & teal garage… the possibilities are endless. The Columbus Union Station Arch.  Even the suburbs have their own little downtowns (Westerville, Worthington, Dublin, Pickerington, etc), that are quaint and have good spots for engagement pictures.

More urban spots for engagement pictures you might want to try: German Village (brick streets and interesting architecture), Olde Towne East (more interesting architecture), Italian Village, and areas in between.

If you are a big Ohio State fan, you can head over to Ohio State’s campus for engagement pictures.  The popular spots there would be Mirror Lake, the Browning Amphitheater, the new Ohio Union (which is an amazing place for pictures), or the Ohio Stadium.

If it’s wintertime and you want to (or have to) do engagement pictures in the winter, don some cute hats and play in the snow! (that is, assuming we have real snow and not gray mush), and if you want to do indoor engagement pictures, here are some ideas.  Franklin Park Conservatory is beautiful and green year-round (just pay a fee to get in).  The Columbus Convention Center is very cool on both the inside and outside.  Do you have a favorite restaurant, pub, grocery store, laundromat, mall, rec center, or shop to play in? (get permission first).  Some hotels in the area are very interesting and beautiful on the inside (again, get permission).  The main branch of the Columbus Public Library is beautiful on the inside (be respectful in there). The Columbus Museum of Art is also very beautiful. (ditto).  COSI is also very fun and interesting on the inside.

And lastly, you can do engagement pictures at your home or in your neighborhood! With your car, your little doggie, or whatever you have that might make them personal and “you”.  This list isn’t a complete list… the possibilities are really infinite if you think about it.  Even sitting at the side of the road in some Queen Anne’s Lace could be beautiful! But if you’re stuck for some ideas to spark some creativity, hopefully this list helped.

And if you’re in the market for a photographer to do your engagement (and/or wedding) photos, hop back to my main web site and have a look at my galleries… I LOVE doing engagement pictures!!! :-)

Chelsea & Jim’s wedding | Columbus Ohio wedding photographer

Before I photographed Chelsea & Jim’s wedding, I hadn’t set foot into the Ohio Union.  I had no idea just how amazing that place was.  After getting ready in the Green Room, Chelsea & Jim had a romantic “first sight” moment alone in Performance Hall (which I photographed, of course. ;-)   Afterwards, we did some family formals in front of the fireplace, and took pictures with the wedding party in various areas around the Ohio Union.  It has so many interesting elements to add to wedding pictures!  After the ceremony, the bride & groom and wedding party took a driving route to Mirror Lake (and the amphitheater), and then the Ohio Stadium for more pictures.  The reception was at the Clintonville Women’s Club.

I have to say that photographing their wedding was such a pleasure; they were such a fun couple.  You can tell from the pictures. :-)

Rachel & Tim’s wedding | Columbus Ohio wedding photographer

It’s been a busy year for weddings! Rachel & Tim’s wedding was on Sunday, June 20, 2010 at the Brice United Methodist Church, and their reception was at the North Bank Park pavilion, Columbus Ohio.  The one word to describe their wedding was “FUN”. Everyone had an amazing time at their reception, and some of the children even got soaked in the fountains.  You have an excellent view of the Columbus skyline at North Bank Park, and when the sun starts to set, it gives everything a golden glow.  It’s really a great place to host your wedding reception.

Here are some of my favorite pictures from the event!

Tiffany & Jeremy’s wedding | Columbus Ohio wedding photographer

Tiffany and Jeremy’s wedding was at the Parkview United Methodist Church, in Columbus OH, and their wedding reception was at the Bolton Field airport, on June 19, 2010.  The weather was beautiful, we could not have asked for a nicer day.  Tiffany and Jeremy both are artists, and when we first met, Tiffany said that she was looking for something unique and artistic in her wedding pictures.  And when she told me that they would have her father’s airplane at the wedding reception, I knew we would create something special.  So without further ado, here are some select pictures from their special day:

Erin & Greg’s engagement pictures | Columbus Ohio wedding photographer

I’ve been really bad about updating the blog… be prepared for a blog update storm as I post some recent sessions here!

For Erin & Greg’s engagement pictures, we went to Franklin Park to get the creative juices flowing.  They are getting married out east, and wanted some creative engagement pictures here in their hometown (Columbus).  We had a lot of fun that day, check out some of the great shots we did:

Amanda & David’s Wedding – Jan 2, 2010 | Columbus Ohio Wedding Photographer

I had the pleasure of photographing Amanda & David’s wedding at the Pool of Bethesda, CLGI on January 2, 2010 … first wedding of the new year! What a wonderful way to begin the new year, with a wedding, full of promise and love.  Their beautiful reception was held at the Embassy Suites Columbus Airport.  We couldn’t go outside for pictures… too cold! But the hotel had a gorgeous interior, perfect for some fun creativity.  Here are some of my favorite photos from their wedding day!

The balcony was decorated for winter at the hotel.  Very pretty!  I took this photo from the ground floor with a long lens… this was their send-off picture before they retreated to their room. :)

I love the fullness of Amanda’s dress, like a fairytale princess meeting her Prince Charming.

This was when they got into the limo to head off to the reception… it was bitter cold outside that day, they were troopers braving the weather even for the few minutes to get into the car.

This was take 1 of throwing the bouquet… the ladies were so excited to get it that there was a 3-way tie for the bouquet on the first toss.  When I photograph the tossing of the bouquet, I always aim to get that perfect shot with the bouquet mid-air and an action shot of the ladies catching it. :)

Nikki & Javier’s engagement pictures | Columbus Ohio engagement photographer

This fall has been crazy busy with photography… which is a good thing, but it’s bad as far as having the time to update my blog!  I have so many wonderful sessions that I would love to post.  If you are a blog subscriber, I apologize for the sudden influx in blog updates.

I had a lot of fun photographing Nikki & Javier’s engagement pictures.  We started up at Inniswoods, but got rained out after a few minutes.  So we rescheduled for later on in the week, and went over to Minerva Lake for a change of pace.  I love Minerva Lake, it’s a very beautiful, small park.

This next one was just me being creative… our shoot was the week before Halloween, and it was very dark and overcast outside.  So using my flash, I exposed for the sky and got a pretty creepy Halloweeny sort of shot that I think is fun. :-)

Ok this next one was just them having fun! It makes me laugh when I look at it. :-)

Mary-Rebekah and Ben’s Engagement Photos | Columbus Ohio wedding photographer

I met up with  Mary-Rebekah and Ben down at Goodale Park for their engagement pictures towards the end of October.  It was my first time doing engagement pictures at Goodale Park, so it was a fun time for me to try out some creative stuff in a new location.  The weather was fabulous! It does start to get dark early, and once the sun starts to go down, you lose light SO fast.  This was the perfect time to do engagement pictures, because a week later, most of the leaves had fallen off the trees.

They’re getting married next July, and I’m very much looking forward to photographing their wedding!

We walked over to the Short North to do some more “urban” engagement pictures.  Marcella’s is “their” restaurant (and they went there for some food after we were done with the photography session).

Emily & Kent’s Engagement Pictures | Columbus Ohio photographer

I met up with Emily & Kent at Inniswoods for their engagement pictures… and I asked them, “Are you more interested in posing smiling for the camera, or are you more interested in artistic sorts of shots?”  I was really ecstatic when they responded that they prefer more artistic pictures… those are the ones that I really enjoy doing (both during weddings and for engagements).  It was a fantastic day for photography sessions at Inniswoods… you would not BELIEVE the number of photographers and clients who were also there.  It was actually kind of hard to get pictures without people in the background.

I’m also photographing their wedding this next April.  Should be a good time! :-)
