Outdoor 2 year pictures | Columbus OH photographer

Miss D has been coming to me for her pictures since she was born (we did newborn photographs, 5 month baby pictures, 9 month, 1 year/birthday photos, and now 2 year!), and she has got to be one of the easiest 2 year olds to photograph that I have encountered.  Most 2 year old children are very opinionated and use their new word “NO” that they learned, but Miss D just goes with the flow and is very easy-going.

For this session, we did most of the child photography outdoors at one of my favorite parks: Inniswoods (which is part of the Columbus Metro Parks in Ohio).  Then on another day, we concluded our session at my portrait studio in Central Ohio.

When photographing children (and even babies), one thing I ask parents to keep in mind is that if the session is fun for the kids, it will go much more smoothly and we will get the most natural and happy expressions in the photographs.  Miss D’s parents always bring really adorable little outfits for me to photograph her in  (this time included a dress from Lottie Da, a flower from bows2cute.com, a headband from Cutie Heads (purchased at Helen Winnmore Crafts).

Here are a few of my favorite photographs from Miss D’s 2 year photography session:

Here is one of my favorite photos of Miss D with her lollipop. (It has something like 1000 calories so I don't recommend eating the whole thing!)

And here is a close up, just to show I did take some. I love the adorable expression on her face, and you can really see how blue and sparkly her eyes are! (I also couldn't get over how adorable that dress is, she wears it well!)

Miss Vivi | Columbus Ohio Children Photographer

These photos are close to my heart!  I had an idea of some photos that I wanted to create for my youngest daughter, because I have canvas art of her siblings on our walls but none of her.  So I got this idea of doing a fantasy theme… the problem is usually finding the time to do it, so this has been an ongoing “idea” for a few months.

So I ordered this dress from Ebay, and had some help to decorate it a bit with some flowers, and had a 15 minute photo session while my son had his gymnastics class to try it out.  I have some other ideas so these will probably not be the only photos in this dress. :-)

Stay tuned, I think in the fall or whenever we have some more time, we will go have another fairy tale photography session. :-)

2 year pictures | Columbus Ohio photographer

I had a wonderful session with this little girl for her 2 year pictures at Inniswoods Metro Gardens, in Westerville Ohio.  She is such a cutie patootie!  She is also a very active little spitfire with a mind of her own (not that you can tell from the pictures).  I have some children’s furniture props at the studio, and a lot of times I’ll take some of it to the park because it keeps the little kids contained and interested in something new (for at least a minute).

Fall Family Pictures | Columbus Ohio family photographer

October is always the busiest month out of the year, and this past October was no exception.  It is really amazing to me, following the pattern of the fall leaves.  The first weekend in October, there was not much color, and most people wanted to wait a bit to do their portraits.  The 2nd & 3rd weekends had more color, with the weekend of the 24th and 25th at the peak color.  The weekend of Halloween, most of the leaves had fallen off the trees, and I had to hunt around to find trees still with color.

The number of photographers at the parks were quite amazing too.  Usually when I am shooting up at Inniswoods, there might be another photographer there. In October, you could count at least 5-8 there in the late afternoons, and sometimes on Saturdays you’d watch and see weddings parading in and out.  The rangers certainly had their work cut out for them!

So here are a smattering of some of the recent outdoor photography sessions from this fall.  Enjoy!

Almost-Fall Park Family pictures | Columbus Ohio Family photographer

Yay! The fall leaves are almost upon us! Which is awesome because I was getting a little bit tired of the stifling hot weather.  But it means winter is fast approaching… ok let’s just not think about that part. I love all the color in the fall leaves… there’s a very short fall leaf season that runs 2nd week of October into the first week of November (the earlier into it, the more leaves that are still on the trees).  This is actually the most popular time of the year to get outdoor pictures done… last chance before the cold weather hits too!

As of right now, I have still available 10/3 @ 9 am, 10/3 @ 4:30 pm, 10/11 at 9 am, 10/24 at 5 pm, 10/31 at 9 am, 10/31 at 4:30 pm, 11/1 at 8:30 am, 11/1 at 3:30 pm.  If you were thinking of booking an outdoor shoot, and are constrained by the weekend, then you’ll want to call fast, because these slots will fill up.  (call 614-323-3147, just say the Blog sent you).  For my outdoor park photography sessions, I do one in the morning and one in the late afternoon, since this is when the light is best in the sky.

Want to see a recent session? I thought so!  Here’s a little sneak peek!

mackim-001

mackim-002Ok this one looks kind of scary but cool at the same time.  They were really having a blast!

mackim-003This is their new baby… what a sweetheart, and look at all that HAIR!!  I photographed this same family a year ago, and it was so nice to see them again, and see how their older son had grown (but still had the same spunk!)

We had awesome weather, and some fantastic light that evening.

mackim-006Here he’s going PEEK A BOO! One technique that I use to get natural, happy expressions from kids is to play games with them.  If the kids are having fun, they will have natural smiles instead of forced “cheesy” grins. (which if you catch my son with one, it looks more like a grimace of pain).

I have a lot of catching up to do with my blog.  So you’re going to see a slew of new posts to follow.  I really want to post some of these recent weddings that I’ve done.  They were so much fun!  Have a great evening!

If you happened upon my blog via a search engine and are looking for a photographer in the Columbus, Ohio area, you might want to go check out my main site which is at http://www.dgnphoto.net, where I have galleries & pricing information. And as always if you have any questions or would like to book a photography session, you can give me a call at 614-323-3147.

What kind of photography do I do? I am a bit of a jack-of-all-trades, but I would say I am primarily a portrait photographer and the majority of my clientele are people wanting family portraits, senior pictures, maternity & newborn photos, and children & baby portraiture. And then secondly I’m a wedding photographer, and I accept a limited number of weddings per year. Occasionally I wear a pet photographer hat, and I also do corporate & acting headshots. My studio is in uptown Westerville (hours available by appointment only), in the Columbus Ohio area, but I split my time there and out on location shoots (parks and urban areas are my favorite!)

A sweet newborn baby’s photographs, with his big sis!

This poor little guy was having some tummy problems so wasn’t a happy camper! Such a sweetie, I felt so bad for him that we couldn’t wave a magic wand and make it all better.

But here is his big sis! She is almost turning 3, and we did her 2 year pictures in April 2008, so it was great to see her (and her family) again! So we did a combo 3 year/newborn/family photography session.  Here’s Little Miss Spunky herself:

And she is such a devoted big sister!  (We’ll see how much she appreciates him once he becomes mobile and knocking down her toys! ;-) )
